Today’s Scripture
“Not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42, KJV)
Today’s Word
Are you convinced that God ‘knows’ what is best for you? Do you truly believe that God ‘wants’ what is best for you? If your answer to these questions is yes, then always pursue God’s agenda.
The bible tells us that on one occasion while rebuking Peter, Jesus said, “For thou savourest not the things that be of God” (Mat. 16:23). In other words, he was telling Peter that he was not pursing God’s agenda, in that particular situation. Jesus made this declaration because even though Peter thought that he was doing something honorable and right, that he actually wasn’t. In fact, had Jesus permitted what Peter suggested to occur, there would not have been a death, burial and resurrection; which would have led to something disastrous for all people. There are times when we feel a certain way that we will choose to follow a particular course of action. We will do so, because initially it will make us feel better. However, if God has another agenda, despite how we feel, we should always forsake ours and follow his.
It must be said that Jesus held himself to the same standards when it came to pursing God the Father’s agenda. The bible tells us that when he was faced with a situation that he did not want to experience, that he looked to God his Father and said, “Remove this cup from me” (Luke 22:42). This means that he asked his Father to eliminate the possibility of him going through this particular situation. However, immediately afterwards, (before his Father could respond), Jesus said, “Nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” In other words, Jesus was saying, “because you know what is best for me, and, will do what is best for me, I ask that you do your will; in other words pursue your agenda.” After this decision, Jesus experienced peace, comfort and the strength to endure the most challenging situation anyone has ever faced; and after all was said and done, Jesus was victorious and mankind is better off.
We all have issues that we would like to go away, people we don’t want to deal with, things we don’t want to go through, as well as, our own plans for dealing with them. Let me encourage you, in spite of these and any other concerns that you have, to always pursue God’s agenda. When this is done consistently, like Jesus and those who follow him, you too will receive the answers you need, God’s grace to easily handle what you are facing and, through him, come out on top every time; that you may experience tremendous happiness and success in life.
Today’s Prayer
Heavenly Father we thank you for your love and kindness. You have taught us in your word that pursuing your agenda was not only the key to Jesus’ success, but that it is also the key to ours. Our prayer is that you help us to better trust you to work things out for our good and to pursue your will and not our own in every situation; that we may experience victory at all times and the abundant life which you have made available to us, in Jesus name. Amen.
